Why train your boilerman?

The responsibilities of boiler operators and managers is often underestimated.

Not least is the safety aspect. Someone once calculated that a 5 tonne boiler has the explosive capacity to launch a family hatchback 800 mtrs into the air! Obviously entrusting this type of plant to an untrained operator is inadvisable.

It is also clear that the running costs of a correctly operated boiler are far less than a “neglected” boiler in the long term. With today’s ever soaring fuel costs investing in training could prove to be a very wise move.

Emission to atmosphere is a topic which we all should be concerned about, and stricter legislation is surely to come. In reality however it is often way down on the priority list. With a boiler operator who is trained to monitor these emissions and take remedial steps, consciences (along with the air) can be clear!

Recognising the need for formal boiler operator qualifications the CEA, along with GAStec, HSE, the Carbon Trust, insurance companies and boiler manufacturers, developed the Boiler Operative Accreditation Scheme. This leads to the qualification Certified Industrial Boiler Operative (Cert IBO for short).

Byworth Boilers are proud to be one of the first companies accredited to provide training courses to fully prepare candidates for the written and verbal assessments. Facilities include a fully operating steam boiler for hands on instruction, and a comfortable dedicated training room. At Byworth, candidates get the unique opportunity to view boilers at various stages of construction, which demonstrates the internal configuration of a boiler like no diagrams can! Delegates on the first few courses have thoroughly enjoyed the training and have found it invaluable to their everyday job.
